Piñones Mangrove

El Yunque Tropical Forest

The only Tropical Forest in the U.S. National Forest System, it is made up of some over 240 different species of trees, and consists of a series of forests, each one determined by its altitude. El Toro, the highest peak in the forest, rises to 3,532 feet.

Camping is allowed in El Yunque (with a free permit, get it before 3 pm). Other tours and amenities are available (please call).

Guajataca Rainforest
The Guajataca Forest is located in the northwestern region of the island near Arecibo, one of several national forests in the “karst” country. A hike along its 25 miles of trails is a memorable lesson in the flora and fauna of a humid subtropical ecosystem.

Toro Negro Forest
Puerto Rico’s highest peak (Cerro de Punta, at 4,390 feet) and highest lake (Lago Guineo) are both in the Toro Negro Forest Reserve. Located in the central mountain region, this destination offers uninterrupted views of most of the island and the seas beyond.
