City of Arecibo
|
|
Also known as
the "Villa del Capitán Correa", Arecibo is a municipality located in the
northern shores of Puerto Rico. The city itself is a growing industrial zone
with many locations to visit and explore. The name "Arecibo" comes from the
indian tribe leader that resided on the area at the time the Spanish
Conquistadors settled the zone in 1556. To most American's Arecibo only brings
an image of aliens and space, mostly of course due to the Arecibo Observatory,
the world's largest radio-telescope, and which has been featured in several
movies. However, Arecibo is filled with other places for the enjoyment of the
whole family. You can explore the "Indian Cave", a cave located right on the
beachside and which is filled with many petrogliphs or carvings on the stone
made by the early inhabitants of the Island.
How to Get There
Getting to Arecibo is easy if you are coming from San Juan, taking Route 22
which will take you directly pass the towns of Vega Alta / Vega Baja, Manatí,
and others cities along the north coast. The trip from San Juan to Arecibo is
about 45 - 60 minutes depending on traffic. Getting to Arecibo from Ponce
(south) is a little bit more complicated but more enjoyable. Road #10 connects
Ponce to Adjuntas and the towns of Utuado and Arecibo. Since the highway is
unfinished (missing a section from Adjuntas to Utuado) you will need to take the
old road #123 from Adjuntas to Utuado and from there to Arecibo.

Exploring the Area - What to Expect
Getting to Arecibo is fun for the whole family. If you are staying in San
Juan, the best way to enjoy Arecibo is to take a day to explore the zone. We
recommend you start the day by getting early to the
Camuy Caverns which lie about a few minutes from Arecibo in the City of
Camuy. Then after that head towards the
Arecibo Observatory, and then to close the day you can spend an afternoon of
fun for the kids at the
Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park.
