Review: Hotel Villa Cofresí
By Ron | 2/17/2010, @6:00:13 AM
Hotel Villa Cofresí is one unique place to spend your stay in Puerto Rico. As we have always said, you can spend your vacations on a big name hotel – which we have plenty, by the way – but if you want to really catch the look and feel of Puerto Rico, there’s no better place than our Small Country Inns or “Paradores”. Puerto Rico’s paradores offer an unique experience. Often operated by its owners, our paradores are small country inns located basically everywhere on the island. Each has its own look and feel, far away from the standard hotel packages, and often are themed around the area on the island they are located in. Last year we had the opportunity to visit Villa Cofresí as part of a business trip, and we had a blast.
Getting to Villa Cofresí Villa Cofresí is located right on the beach of the town of Rincón, the surfing Mecca in Puerto Rico. If you are coming from San Juan, the best way is simply to head north-northwest in the direction of Arecibo, Isabela and Mayaguez. If you are coming from Ponce or the south, just take road PR #2 towards Mayaguez / Aguadilla.
About the Area Hotel Villa Cofresí is a modestly sized hotel. The location is easily accessible and close enough from the city for you to be able to go either beach or city, so if you want to just jump to the highway to explore shopping malls or some main-stream food, you are there. The Hotel has its own parking space, however very limited, but reserved for hotel guests. So if you happen to be without a spot, ask the front desk clerk and they will accommodate you. There are several apartments and other rentals on the area, so the hotel is not isolated.
About the facility The hotel itself has been expanded over the last few years. The main hotel facility is an L-shaped building that hosts the main lobby and front desk, the patio area, and the main rooms. Right next to the main lobby is the Restaurant (more on that below) and the pool. The main lobby is an excellent place to sit, relax and enjoy the fresh air. There are plenty of tables and benches for you to sit and relax, along with pool tables (a buck per game), and a ping-pong table. Right in the center of the patio is the bar where you can get any type of drink (ask for the drink in the freshly cut coconut).
The main hotel building is divided into a three-story building to the front, and a two story building that faces the beach. The front area has rooms that face the beach and the pool area, while the other side faces the parking lot. The two-story building to the side faces the beach. In fact, the beach shore itself is no more than a mere 30 – 40 feet away from the building. In one of our trips we chose a beachside room in the second floor, and we were able to enjoy the relaxing sound of the waves hitting the shore all night. The bad side is that on weekends the bar and patio area get crowded as it is a very popular spot for locals, so if you choose the beachside rooms expect to have loud music over weekends and some week nights up to the late hours. The place also has another wing of the hotel a few steps from the main building. This area houses bigger apartments for 4 – 6 people, and has its own parking area. These apartments are more designed for bigger families or groups.
About the Amenities The hotel rooms are neatly decorated and maintained, with beach themed décor and styles all around the hotel. All rooms have TV with cable and A/C. The rooms are always very clean and neatly organized. On some of the rooms the furniture needs some work, or newer ones – but tolerable. The pool is quite good, with good depth both for swimmers and kids, and a good number of beach chairs to soak in the sun.
About the Restaurant One of the best features of this hotel is the restaurant. On all the occasions we’ve been there we’ve had the best compliments of the food – it is just GREAT! You can enjoy some great Puerto Rican or International dishes here, with a nice touch of local cuisine, and the prices are not so bad at all. So although there are some restaurants on the area, we feel you won’t have the need to leave the place to eat.
Conclusion Villa Cofresí is a good location that you can choose to stay, with ample space and amenities to enjoy and right next to the beach. It also has an excellent restaurant and well maintained rooms, so if you want to take a trip to Rincón we recommend Villa Cofresí.
