JCA releases public advisory for contaminated beaches

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - Beach goers should be on the alert of three public beaches in Puerto Rico that have been labeled as inadequate for swimming, among them the popular Crash Boat beach in Aguadilla, according to a Press Release released yesterday by the Puerto Rico Ambient Quality Office (JCA).
The statement comes in result of a year-long study performed by the JCA that analyzes the bacterial content of the water of public beaches all around Puerto Rico. The investigation analyzes common content of bacteria, specifically a limit of 200 colonies of fecal coliforms per 100ml and 35 colonies of enterococcus per 100ml.
A beach is considered inadequate for public use if it fails the above marginal limit on two consecutive samples.
The alert indicates that Crash Boat Beach, the Balneario de Patillas and the Balneario Puerto Nuevo in Vega Baja did not comply with these limits during the two previous occasions, therefore an advisory has been released warning beach goers and the general public from bathing or swimming on these areas as a precautionary measure.
Infection by this kind of bacteria can lead to several mild to grave bacterial infection diseases, such as urinary tract infection, gastro-intestinal sickness, and other serious conditions such as meningitis.
The JCA has stated it will release another bulletin next week.
