Location Description
Puerto Rico’s highest peak (Cerro de Punta, at 4,390 feet) and highest lake (Lago Guineo) are both in the Toro Negro Forest Reserve. Located in the central mountain region, this destination offers uninterrupted views of most of the island and the seas beyond.
The Reserve itself was designed for long, exploratory walks on five different marked trails, the longest of which can take up to 2 hours to trek. One of them leads to an observation tower with spectacular views.
A camping area—complete with all kinds of facilities for bonfires, waste disposal and bathrooms—is available for visitors. If you are lucky, you’ll be able to take a dip in the natural hot springs that appear sporadically during the year.
You can always swim in the large freshwater pool at the Doña Juana Recreational Area and hike the trail that leads to the 200-foot Doña Juana Falls. All the trails in the Toro Negro Forest are rugged and often slippery, so plan ahead to take the right gear.
Few visitors to our island make their way to this isolated spot, but those who do will be extremely glad to number among them!
