Sugar cane plantation that was the scenario of many historical events on the Island, including the first battel of the Spanish American war in Puerto Rico.

One of the oldest plantations in Guánica, Hacienda Santa Rita was the backdrop to many historical events on Guánica and Puerto Rico. Actually the Home of the Dominican Sisters Of Our Lady of Fatima, it was once one of the biggest sugar cane plantations of the island, with more than 1,000 acres of plantation land worked by black slaves. In 1898, the plantation housed the first spanish forces that confronted american forces during the Spanish American War. In fact, it was on the lands of the plantation where the first battle of such war in Puerto Rico was fought.
