A restored nineteenth-century coffe plantation in the central mountains near the town of Jayuya. Parador Hacienda Gripiñas is a working plantation that evokes the atmosphere of bygone days more than any other of the island's "paradores" or country inns.
Named for the tangy sweet flavor of its cofee, Gripiñas is perched at 3,000 feet on twenty-three acres where the coffee aroma lingers in the air. A narrow, country road (Route 527) overhung with mango trees winds up to the parador through pastoral settings that are light-years from the glitter of San Juan.
The 200-year-old "hacienda" which opened to guests in 1975, is a traditional, gracefully simple island home build of wood, with a wide veranda and shuttered windows. Painted white with green trim, it is surrounded by gardens of tropical flowers and shaded by large fruit and flowering trees. Inside, the parlors are furnished with some quaility carved-wood pieces.
Guest rooms in the original great house are very attractive. They have lovely views of the countryside. If you are a light sleeper or not accustomed to the sounds of the Caribbean countryside, you will need to use a pair of earplugs. A chorus of coqui, the minuscule Puerto Rican tree frog, sings nonstop through the night and at 4:00 a.m. a neighborhood rooster begins trumpeting loud enough to wake the dead.
The dining room is made up of three rooms, one of which has a small interior patio with pretty greenery. Gripiñas is counted among Puerto Rico's gastronomic inns. All meals are served at set hours and feature Puerto Rican cuisine and regional specialties. You will also enjoy fresh local fruits and juices and sample the rich Tres Picachos coffe grown here.
